The Earl of Beaconswood wanted his beloved step-granddaughter to be married and settled happily before he died, but when he realized it was not going to happen, he amended his will. He left his home to Julia on condition she accepted an offer from one of her five step-cousins within a month. They all court her and offer her marriage—all, that is, except Daniel, the new earl, who has always disapproved of Julia's wild ways just as she had always despised his stuffiness. Will he offer before the month is over? More to the point, will she accept if he does?

The end was romantic enough to save the book. But the heroine is selfish, self centered, reckless, and a total witch-b. The author throws all blame on the Hero, as well as "character growth". It was gross how the author tried to make you feel that the heroine was in the right and most men are horrible and controlling. The heroine almost got herself and others killed numerous times. I'm glad that the Hero and heroine did his "character growth" act together, it was sweet. But, I really hated how the author favorably compared love and hate as going hand in hand with a happy marriage. If you can pretend that the heroine had real, actual character growth then you will probably like it.

His free hand was stroking down her inner thigh, on top of her breeches, and up again. And on up until his hand cupped her most private place and his fingers pulsed flat against her.

And the encounter changed tone. They both stopped fighting as if by mutual consent, although not a word had been exchanged. She tilted her hips, allowing his hand freer access. And she closed her eyes again as his head lifted and his mouth covered hers once more, open, wet, warm. Bringing pleasure. Bringing intimacy with his tongue, stroking aches and yearnings through her mouth and into her throat and breasts and on downward to be intensified by his hand.

He lifted his mouth away to kiss her chin and her throat. But they opened their eyes at the same moment and gazed with heavy desire into each other’s eyes. There was a moment, Julia thought afterward, or perhaps the merest fraction of a moment, when all they saw was a mirrored self, a mutuality of need and desire. No more than a moment at the longest.
