Tim Maleeny

Tim Maleeny is an American author recognized for his Cape Weathers Investigation series of mysteries (Greasing the Piñata, Beating the Babushka, Stealing the Dragon, Boxing the Octopus, and Hanging the Devil) and the comedic thriller Jump (2009). Among his other works are a Sam McGowan Adventures book and an omnibus collection with Job Talton and Dashiell Hammett.

Tim Maleeny was born in New Jersey. He was the second son of an organic chemist and a registered nurse. Growing up in an environment rich with pulp adventures and paperback mysteries, Tim was drawn to crime fiction, which he began to write after moving to San Francisco.

He has won numerous awards for his short fiction, which has appeared in several anthologies. He won the prestigious Macavity Award for the best story of the year. His work is celebrated for its intelligent, dynamic storytelling and compelling characters, leading Booklist to praise the Cape Weathers series as "smart, snappily written, energetic mysteries starring an engaging hero."

In 2023, Maleeny published Hanging the Devil, the latest book in the Cape Weathers series. The novel explores the entwined worlds of genetically engineered macaques, state-sponsored art theft, and advanced technological espionage.

In describing his writing process, Maleeny says, "I think of dialogue as action, no different than a car chase or a gunfight, with each character using their voice to gain an advantage, divert suspicion or bring the temperature down in an overheated situation."

Hanging the Devil (2023) continues to draw readers with its character-driven narrative and complex plot lines involving international crime and high-tech intrigue. Maleeny states, "Believe it or not, all the crimes are based on actual events."

His approach to character creation is deeply empathetic; Maleeny spends considerable time developing backstories, allowing him to portray their psychological depth authentically. "If you can't personally relate to—or channel—your characters, then you need to do more homework until they appear fully three-dimensional on the page," he explains.

As for future projects, Maleeny hints at more adventures for his characters, driven by his interest in global crime syndicates and their hidden operations.

Tim Maleeny currently lives in New York City with his wife, Kathryn, and their two daughters, Clare and Helen.
