Learn how to cope with death by facing real stories of loss.

“I am astounded at how much Dying Ways meant to me. I come from a traditional conservative family and death was only discussed in hushed tones. This book made me realize that death should not be an off-topic issue but rather something that must be faced in a loving and forthright manner. I feel that I have been empowered by this book.”

In the end, there is only the story we leave behind.

For fifty-six years, palliative nurse Dale Heim has been a keeper of stories—whispered confessions, defiant last wishes, and unexpected moments of grace at life’s closing. Face the comedy, tragedy, beauty, and despair of death through these true stories.

In Dying Ways, she shares raw, tender stories from the frontlines of mortality: A tantric teacher who swims with dolphins as her final act of freedom; A grandmother dancing with butterfly tattoos over mastectomy scars; A WWII survivor serenaded by the Hallelujah Chorus as she takes her last breath; and many more.

With unflinching honesty and deep compassion, Dale reveals how death reshapes the living—offering lessons in forgiveness, acceptance, and the courage to live fully, even as the light fades. From the chaos of trauma wards to quiet hospice rooms, she shows that dying is not an end but a poignant, human art. That there is such a thing as a good death, and ways to avoid a bad one.

This is an essential companion for caregivers, grievers, and anyone who fears mortality’s shadow. Because as Dale reminds us:

«Death is only ugly if we allow it to be—but it can be the most beautiful truth we ever live.»

“I recently lost my mother and was with her in her last moments, so seeing this book, I went on a journey to find out how the process was for others. I found the book to be helpful, cathartic, and informative. I highly recommend this book!”
